Excerpt

The cool summer breeze filtered through the half-opened window of the room on the second floor. All was silent in the room and not even the sheer drapes rustled as they billowed in the breeze. As the pendant light overhead was switched off, the room was hazily illuminated by a sultry, pink glow that came from the wall lamps, which were decorated with pastel pink lamp shades. A soft thud sounded in the room as clothes were discarded onto the floor and in the incandescent glow of the lights, the woman’s ravishing figure was made all the more alluring. The man seated across from her arched his brows in annoyance and displeasure, his gaze darkening as a hard look passed over his face. Her heart was beating fast and as the last piece of clothing fell away from her body, she felt blood rush to her face, coloring her once-pale cheeks. Her chest rose and fell rapidly while her ample bosom seemed to tremble with every breath she took. However, the man’s gaze merely lingered on her for less than a second before he tore his eyes away and said, “Put your clothes back on.” He spoke curtly and there was nothing more to his voice other than indifference. The sound of his breath hitching was the only indication that he felt anything at all. She was flustered and clenched her fists tightly. Although she was trembling, she stubbornly stepped forward in one long stride and demanded, “Why?” It was the question she had been wanting to ask for the past four years. Four whole years. The man before her was no stranger to her at all. In fact, they had been living together for four years. And yet, he had not touched her once throughout their entire marriage, though he would not hesitate to provide her with everything else in life. One would be rendered speechless if they were to find out that she was still a virgin after four years of marriage. Eris couldn’t understand what she had done to warrant such horrible treatment from him. Why is he torturing me like this? Presently, Mark’s arctic gaze fell upon her body once more as he pressed his lips into a hard line. After what felt like a long time, he finally said coolly, “Put on your clothes and don’t ever do this again.” With that, he rose from the couch and brushed past Eris toward the door without giving her so much as a second glance. He was blatantly ignoring her. Upon seeing that, she felt her heart clench and she wasn’t sure if she was devastated or ashamed. It was as if all the warmth had suddenly drained out of her. “Don’t you even have the slightest sense of guilt for leaving me here, Mark? What have I done to deserve this? Why are you treating me this way? We’ve been married for four years, but I feel like I might as well have married thin air. You don’t eat with me, you don’t go shopping with me, and you won’t even so much as glance at me! This house is like a tomb and I’m its sorry keeper. If you don’t love me, and if you don’t even care about our marriage, then why can’t you just divorce me and let me be free?” In a moment of desperation, Eris reached out and grabbed Mark before he could stride past her. She could feel the warmth of his palm. He stiffened when he felt her soft, cold fingertips against his skin before he roughly pushed her hand aside without any hesitation. He glared at her with an angry and menacing look in his eyes.
