A beautifully written book following the twist and turns of a young girl's life into adulthood, some of which are heart breaking, but all help to make the protagonist the strong, able yet sentimental and loving person she grows up to be. The story is written from mainly the protagonist's viewpoint but this neither narrows or detracts from the other characters. Be prepared for a myriad of feelings, from carefree happiness, to despair and most definitely anger. I cried at the most unexpected, ( Aunt Lily holding on to Betsy's and her siblings toys she had given them one Christmas). This book came recommended to me as I do not normally like historical fiction but I loved it and would highly recommend it. I look forward to reading many more books from Donna H Duhig.
