“Since you're so capable, go out and earn money yourself then. I'm the one managing the household. Without me, can you really support the entire family?” A shrill voice belonging to Hilary Quint rang out.
Upon arriving home, Veronica Saville overheard the commotion. She stood outside the door and winced at the tension in the air.
As her footsteps came to a stop, a middle-aged man spoke up carefully. “Hilary, Veronica will be home soon. Can you lower your voice?”
“Why? You don't have the guts to admit your mistake? Richard Saville, if it wasn't for your misjudgment, the company wouldn't have lost three million! You need to figure out how to make up for the loss!”
Veronica waited until the voices dwindled down before she stepped into the house. She saw her father sitting on the couch and greeted him, “Dad!”
“Veronica, you're back.” Richard Saville flashed his daughter a bitter smile. “Did you hear everything Hilary said earlier?”
“Yeah. Did something happen to the company? Hilary seemed really upset,” said Veronica, concern written all over her face.
They were a well-to-do family, but as Richard's company was in the doldrums for the past few years, he couldn't say anything as Hilary yelled at him.
As the backbone of the family, Richard felt upset whenever Hilary reprimanded him, but he couldn't bring himself to vent his frustrations to Veronica.
He curved his lips up and changed the topic. “Veronica, have you eaten? I'll ask Lydia to heat up some dishes for you. You don't come home often. Are you going to stay longer at home this time around?”
“Dad, my fall break has started. Did you forget about it?” Veronica reminded him.
“Oh? I must've forgotten about it. I've been suffering from a bad memory lately.” Richard rose to his feet to gaze at his daughter, who was around his height. The grin on his face widened.
Veronica told him, “Dad, if you're facing any trouble in your company, let me know. I'll think of a way to help you.”
Hilary, who had just returned to the living room, immediately retorted, “You'll help him? How?”
Veronica met Hilary's gaze and lifted the corner of her lip. “Hilary, I'm just trying to help Dad.”
“Help him? Or are you planning to take over the company?” A drawled-out voice dripping with mockery rang out as a young lady clad in a pink dress sashayed down the stairs.
“Violet, don't be rude to your sister,” chided Richard as his youngest daughter, Violet Saville, made her way to them.
Hilary sat down on the couch and scoffed. “I think Violet's right. Veronica must be feeling threatened since Violet is all grown up now. She wants to enter the company and help out as soon as possible so she can take total control of the company!”
Veronica explained, “Hilary, I'm an acting major, so I won't be taking over the company in the future. You're overthinking things.”
“I'm overthinking things?” Hilary snickered. “Who knows? You might take over the company for real one day!”
