Excerpt

“Twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty!” Ronaldo patted his hooves together with excitement. He had enough money to buy his best friend, Rudi, a pair of flying goggles. His birthday was in a few weeks and Ronaldo wanted to get him something special. He flicked through the FLY-X catalogue. Should I buy banana-yellow or luminous lime? He grabbed his ice cold carrotade and finished it in one gulp. “Phew!” On hot days like this, he wished he didn’t have a fur coat. At least the heat hadn’t made his hair go frizzy – unlike his dad, who, like many of the grown-up reindeer, resembled a windswept poodle! Ronaldo giggled just thinking about him. Bang, bang, bang! He rushed to the bedroom window to see who was knocking on the front door. But whoever it was had already gone inside. “Ronaldo!” Dad called from downstairs. He padded on to the landing and peered over the bannister. Dad was ushering Mrs Gunnersson, Rudi’s mother, into the hallway. She had a grey face with white freckles splattered across her nose, just like Rudi did. And crikey, she had a terrible case of the frizzies! Her hair made Dad’s look quite fashionable. “Oh, Ronaldo!” she ran her hoof through her crazy mane. “It’s Rudi!” “Is it his front hoof?” Ronaldo remembered his friend catapulting over a tree stump on roller skates the previous day. “It’s swollen,” she wailed. “I’ve made an appointment to see Doctor Kloppen today.” “Oh!” Ronaldo took a step back from the bannister. “Oh, indeed.” Mrs Gunnersson sighed. “You know what Rudi’s like. Terrified of needles! He’s locked himself in his bedroom and he won’t come out.” She looked up at Ronaldo, her eyes the colour of blueberry jam. “Maybe you could have a word with him? And come with us to see Doctor Kloppen?” Ronaldo stood there, unsure what to say. He didn’t like Doctor Kloppen any more than Rudi did. But then again, the doctor did have a huge jar of lollipops on his desk. The carrot and lemon ones were particularly scrumptious. “Sure, no problem,” he said, smiling. The two reindeer trotted through the woods. The hot weather had melted the snow. Dandelions dotted the blanket of luscious green grass. “Oh, this heat!” Mrs Gunnersson wiped beads of sweat from her forehead. “I really miss snow,” Ronaldo grumbled. “I don’t think reindeer are meant to roller skate. We’re far better at sledging.”

Book Details

BIOGRAPHYI was born in London but now live in Bali with my partner, Mark. I am an author and illustrator and self-published my first children’s book, Ronaldo: The Reindeer Flying Academy last December. So how did a pizza loving Pilates instructor and self-confessed Disney geek end up in writing a book in South East Asia? Maybe its best I rewind back to the 70’s and explain… for the full interview - http://wp.me/p6bDFU-F8
